About the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg:

The University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (German: Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg or FAU) is a university located in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. It is the largest public university in Franken (Northern Bavaria), with eleven faculties, 265 departments, and twelve thousand employees.

Of the colleges, nine are located in Erlangen, and two are in Nuremberg. There are 33,487 students (winter semester 2010/2011) at the university, two thirds of them in Erlangen and one third in Nuremberg. There are approximately 2,700 foreign students.

University history:

The university was founded in 1742 in Bayreuth by Frederick Margrave of Brandenburg, and moved to Erlangen in 1743. Christian Charles Frederick Alexander (one of the founders of the university whose names the university bears) greatly supported the university early on.

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is one of the prestigious universities in Europe and has been named as one of the elite universities in Germany, and in recent years it has consolidated its position as one of the most powerful research universities in Germany from the beginning. The university was a Protestant institution, but slowly it turned into a traditional university. As was the case with most universities in Germany during the Nazi era, the majority of the student council was pro-Nazi. The Technical College was opened in 1966.

With spending of more than 800 million euros annually, the university plays an important economic role in the state of Bavaria. The study of medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is one of the most modern methods of teaching medicine in Germany. The university hospital has a good reputation in the state and its advanced medical equipment and various specialties, making it a hospital of utmost care and a destination for many patients from all over Europe and the Arab world (the Gulf in particular). This makes the city an important destination for medical tourism. The official headquarters of the Union of Arab Doctors in Europe is located in Erlangen.

University vision:

  • We envision a future in which societies thrive and overcome global challenges through smart and sustainable solutions powered by European engineering.
  • A future in which academic excellence and innovation are always linked to social responsibility and commitment.
  • A future where academic and non-academic partners come together to solve real-world problems.
  • A future in which gender balance in STEM careers, sustainable mobility between institutions and collaboration between researchers, students and civil society are the foundations of the new European higher education.

University mission:

It aims to transform European higher education while strengthening the links between engineering and society by:

  • Reinventing the "European Engineer".
  • The democratization of engineering education.
  • The evolution of interdisciplinary engineering education.
  • Encouraging knowledge, skills and technology transfer.
  • Promote inclusion and diversity.
  • Make a real impact on society by following the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Faculties:

The University Council decided in February 2007 during the restructuring program to divide it into five faculties, namely:

  • Faculty of Humanities, Social and Religious Sciences,
  • College of Business, Economics and Law,
  • Faculty of medicine,
  • College of Science,
  • College of Engineering.
