Acting is an activity in which a story is told by way of its promulgation by an actor or actress who adopts a character - in theater, television, film, radio or any other medium that uses the technique of simulation. Acting encompasses a wide range of skills, including a well-developed imagination, emotional attachment, physical expression, vocal projection, clarity of speech, and the ability to interpret drama. Acting also requires the ability to use accents, dialects, improvisation, observation and mimicry, mime, and stage combat. Many actors train extensively in specialized programs or colleges to develop these skills. The vast majority of professional actors have undergone extensive training. Actors and actresses often have multiple coaches and instructors for a full range of rehearsals that include singing, scene work, audition techniques, and camera acting.

One of the first known representatives was an ancient Greek called Thespis of Icaria in Athens. Writing two centuries after the event, Aristotle suggests in his Poetics (circa 335 BC) that Thespis emerged from the dithyrambic choir and took up her as a separate figure.
