What is the specialty of Tourism and Hotel Management
The Department of Hospitality and Tourism refers to management studies on administration in the hospitality industry, of which tourism is a part. Hospitality consists of restaurants, cafes, clubs, resorts, cruise lines and other customer-oriented businesses, a large industry that creates millions of new jobs each year.
According to a study by Deloitte, the hotel sector alone is expected to grow at an annual rate of about 5% to 6%, just one of many sectors in the hospitality industry. Hospitality and tourism management studies teach students how to succeed in this industry so that they can secure a lucrative and rewarding career.
You might wonder why it's called hospitality and tourism management rather than just hospitality management. Well, actually, some schools and organizations call this an area of hospitality management study. However, others refer to it as the Department of Hospitality and Tourism because of the enormous size of the tourism sector. According to Statista, tourism is one of the largest commercial sectors in the world.
History of Tourism and Hotel Management:
The first accommodation was generally family-owned, with families not only providing accommodation, but also food and drink for stressed travellers. The early days of recreational travel were generally reserved for property and very wealthy people, although some travels were taken as part of an educational process or religious requirement. In fact, European monasteries were frequently used for habitation during the Middle Ages. These basic trends continued for some time, until modern transportation reduced the cost of travel enough to fit a less affluent budget.
The word "hospitality" was used before "tourism." Tourism was used to describe individuals traveling away from their homes beginning in the 18th century. The Industrial Revolution in England, along with the creation of more modern means of transport such as ships and railways, made travel easier and more common.
By the mid-18th century, the term hotel was used for housing in Europe, replacing the old idea of an inn or bar there. However, accommodation facilities in America are becoming as popular as small hotels. The first known travel agency, started by Thomas Cook in England, appeared in the mid-19th century and offered a package including rail tickets and a tour book accompanying it. A few years ago, the modern hotel industry began in the United States, with the opening of The City Hotel in New York in 1794.
Before that, passengers may have stopped working like a bar to eat or drink in Boston, the site of America's first coffee shop. However, during the 19th century the first modern restaurant-like establishments were opened in Paris, France. These restaurants, which cater to wealthy customers, were very different from the bars and hotels catering to travellers.
The popularity of travel continued to increase with the advent of modern transportation on the scene. One of the first trips to promote the use of motor vehicles for travel took place in 1888, when Bertha Benz, wife of Carl Benz, whose company would someday become Mercedes Benz, went on a car trip to prove that a long distance was possible and to promote her husband, Benz Patent Motorwagen.
