The University is constantly investing efforts in strengthening its role as a responsible institution within its social community, ensuring the role of a recognized center for scientific and artistic work, bringing together teams of local and international experts and artists around projects relevant to the local, regional, and broader social context and environment.
The organization and activities of the University of Sarajevo, as a public higher education institution in the Sarajevo Canton, are stipulated in the Framework Law on Higher Education of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Law on Higher Education of the Canton of Sarajevo, and the Statutes of the University. The University of Sarajevo consists of twenty-five colleges, three academies and five research institutes with full membership.
University history:
Sarajevo was first put on the map of academic centers in this part of Europe in 1573, with the signing of the endowment of the name Gazi Khosrowbek (endowment). Today, as an associate member, the Gazi Khosrowbek Library is the oldest institution within the University of Sarajevo. After the departure of the Ottoman administration and the arrival of Austria-Hungary, the Judicial Law School was founded in 1887, the National Museum in 1888, and the Catholic School of the Archdiocese of Fara Bosna in 1890. The Eastern Orthodox School in Sarajevo was upgraded to a higher education institution in 1892. The National Museum is Associate member of the University of Sarajevo and the Faculty of Catholic Theology is a full member.
The College of Agriculture and Forestry was established in 1940, followed by the College of Medicine in 1944.
The Teacher Training College and Institute of Biology were established in Sarajevo after the end of World War II, in the then Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. After the establishment of the Faculties of Medicine, Law, Agriculture and Forestry and the subsequent establishment of the Technical College, the Assembly of the People's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the University Law in 1949, which officially established the University of Sarajevo. The Faculty of Philosophy (with the Department of Science) and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became its members in 1950. The decades that followed saw a period of intense growth.
Until 1975, the University of Sarajevo was the only university in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a beacon of higher education and science development in the country. He also contributed significantly to the establishment of the University of Banja Luka in 1975, the University of Tuzla in 1976 and the University of Mostar in 1977.
The international recognition of Bosnia and Herzegovina marked a new era and the university entered it as an association of 19 faculties, 4 academies, 4 graduate schools in Sarajevo and 2 faculties in Zenica.
During the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and the siege of Sarajevo (April 5, 1992 - February 29, 1996), the university suffered massive human losses and material damage - staff suffered and were displaced, faculty were abandoned, buildings and equipment were destroyed or severely damaged. . The university continued its work and struggled to maintain civilized standards in the most difficult conditions faced by any higher education in Europe in the second half of the twentieth century. The international academic community has noted these efforts with admiration.
In 1996, the University of Sarajevo, along with other universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, joined the European Higher Education Reform Support Programs. This period was also marked by extensive work to repair the damage caused by the war and to create an environment suitable for stable and continuous development. The University of Sarajevo has invested all its efforts to fully re-enter contemporary European and international academic trends.
In 1997-2000, the University of Sarajevo coordinated the first European-level TEMPUS project aimed at introducing the 3 + 2 model.
Realizing the importance of positioning itself within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the University of Sarajevo entered into the complex process of reform according to the Bologna Principles in the 2005/2006 academic year without any guidance at the state level and without any political guidance, legal or financial support.
The university has developed or participated in several international third-cycle programs in line with EHEA-ERA standards.
In terms of organization, today the University of Sarajevo is a large and complex public institution, comprising 30 organizational units: 22 faculties, 3 academies, and 5 research institutes, in six areas of academic work: social sciences, humanities, medicine, technical studies, sciences, biotechnology and art. Among the university's affiliated members are the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Gazi Husrev Bey Library and the National Museum, among others.
In May 2013, pursuant to the Administrative Law on Higher Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Law on Higher Education in the Canton of Sarajevo, the Senate of the University of Sarajevo adopted the new statute, thus taking a bold step forward, moving from a loose association of faculties towards a university organized in a way shaped by the European tradition of relevance.
Currently, most of the facilities for full university members and associates are spread all over the city of Sarajevo. The campus, located in the former Tito Barracks, currently houses a group of five colleges and institutes, as well as additional student-focused facilities. Zoning permits and designs have been prepared for a portion of the buildings included in the first part of the campus master plan. The Master Plan was awarded the 2004 Campus Planning Award in Boston, USA.
