An introduction to the university:

The University of Osijek (Latin: Universitas studiorum Mursensis), also known as Osijek UNIOS, is a public university based in the city of Osijek, Croatia. Founded in 1975, it is the leading institution of higher education in the Slavonia region, and one of the largest and oldest universities in Croatia.

The university is organized and includes 12 colleges, academia, and a number of other organizational units. In 1990 it took the name of the Roman Catholic Archbishop Josip Georg Stromae, who was born in the city in 1815. Besides the nationally dominant University of Zagreb, the University of Osijek belongs to the medium-term public institutions established before the independence of Croatia coinciding with the establishment of both the University of Rijeka and the University of Split .

The QS World University Ranking placed the University of Osijek in the range 201 - 250 in Europe and Central Asia in 2019. In 2018, the Webometrics World University Rankings ranked the university as the fourth best university in Croatia out of 49 ranked institutions of higher education from the country.

The university was founded in the 1970s, when many colleges were grouped under one university. In previous years universities were established in the towns of Rijeka Split in Croatia.

1970 was a decade of tremendous rise in the number of higher education institutions in the rest of the former Yugoslavia as well as when universities such as Maribor, Mostar, Banja Luka, Podgorica, Birch, Kragujevac and Tuzla opened their doors. The university is also a member of the European University Association.

University history:

The history of higher education in the town began in 1707, when the first higher education institution was founded in Osijek. The Higher Theological Seminary, which opened in the academic year 1707/1708, had a three-year course of study in philosophy only.

The importance of the first colleges in Osijek lies in their huge contribution to the Croatian language and literature, the dissemination of liberal arts education, and the study of classical languages ​​and literature. The modern history of higher education in the region began in 1959 when the Zagreb School of Economics, in collaboration with the University of Zagreb, and the Part-time Studies Center in Osijek was established as a branch of the Zagreb School of Economics.

The initiative to establish the University of Osijek dates back to 1975. On March 26, 1975, the Croatian Parliament passed a resolution granting approval for the establishment of the University of Osijek. Two months later, on May 31, 1975, the agreement regarding the founding of the University of Osijek was signed by the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Institute of Agriculture, the Faculty of Naval Engineering of the University of Zagreb, the Study Center in Slavonski Brod, the Teacher Training College in Osijek, the Zagreb Academy of Music, and the Library City and Historical Archives in Osijek.

In the following years, the university developed with the establishment of various faculties in 1975 the Faculty of Law was established, in 1976 the Faculty of Food Technology was established, in 1977 the Faculty of Education was established, in 1979 the Faculty of Engineering in Slavonski Brod and Medical Studies in Osijek which evolved into the Faculty of Medicine in 1998.

In 1982 the Faculty of Civil Engineering was established, in 1990 the studies of electrical engineering developed into the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and in the same year the Senate issued a resolution including the name of Josep George Strosmer in the name of the university.

In all sectors of its activities, the University strives towards a standardized and well-coordinated work that will contribute to a high level of integration and the well-being of the academic community in Osijek.

In the next long-term development, the university will focus on research and will establish a center for university research in various fields of science and in interdisciplinary research within doctoral faculties, similar to some well-known European doctoral schools.

The creation of a center of scientific excellence in food production will bring together the best scientific potential in biotechnical sciences.

Establishing university institutes for scientific activities in one or more related scientific fields that will be linked to the process of higher education at the university.

In the coming period, it is necessary to establish a scientific and technological complex for the purpose of marketing scientific results, encouraging cooperation between scientists and businessmen, and promoting an economy based on science. By creating the science and technology park “Technopolis”, the university will contribute to the economic development of eastern Croatia.

Departments and Faculties:

The university includes 12 colleges, the Academy of Arts, departments of mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics, and courses in natural sciences, technical sciences, biomedicine, medicine, biotechnical sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Three other university institutions contribute to and support higher education: the city and university library in Osijek, the Student Center in Osijek, and the Student Center in Slavonski Brod.

In the coming years, the main activity of the Josep Juraj Strömere University administration will be to ensure the regular functioning of the University, including teaching, publishing, research, cooperation between universities in the country and abroad, and the rebuilding and development of the University.

It draws up long-term plans and programs for the development of university facilities in three main locations in the city of Osijek: "Tvrita Barracks", "Drava" and "Gaj".
