An introduction to the Serbian University of Banja Luka:

Serbian University of Banja Luka: It is a public university located in Banja Luka. Founded in 1975, Banja Luka University is the leading institution of higher education in Republika Srpska, one of the two constitutional and legal entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

University history:

Banja Luka University was established on November 7, 1975 as the second university established in the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in 1970 was the years of expansion of higher education in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, during which, throughout the university located in Banja Luka, both the modern University of Montenegro and the University of Montenegro were established. Kragujevac, University of Rijeka, University of Split, University of Maribor, University of Osijek St. Kliment of Ohrid University in Bitola, University of Tuzla and University of Mostar.

In its early years, the university faced a shortage of academic and administrative staff and insufficient academic qualifications. The university opened its first five-year development plan in 1976. The plan highlighted housing construction priorities, scholarship provisions for students, expansion and strengthening of the central youth cooperative, construction of a sports and recreation center, student clinics, and the development of mass cultural activities. Until 1984, the university awarded 13 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and in the same period the university published 47 textbooks and 95 academic books.

In 1987 Banja Luka University was the main institution of the Yugoslav university community. In 1989/1990 she chaired the University Society of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1989 it became a member of the Rector's Conference of the Adriatic Working Group while some of its first scholarly articles were indexed in international databases.

1992-1995 Bosnian War

The Bosnian War period created new challenges as student numbers dwindled, staff and funding decreased, and the institution's function did not stop during the war and continued to function in limited capacities.

In contrast to the situation in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina where each of the ten cantons has its own Ministry of Education and legislative authority over higher education, higher education in Republika Srpska is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Government of Republika Srpska. The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina which serves as the executive branch of the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina does not have a clear competence for higher education or its own Ministry of Education.

The full implementation of the Bologna Process began at Banja Luka University in the 2006/2007 academic year. Some colleges carried out the reform earlier.

Since April 13, 2011 Banja Luka University has been a full member of the European University Association. It is also a member of the European Forest Institute and participates in the TEMPUS and CEEPUS Seventh Framework Programme.

In the aftermath of the 2014 Southeast European floods, the University of Ljubljana donated 25,000 Bosnian Marks to the hardest-hit students and faculty at Banja Luka University. The Czech Technical University in Prague has donated technical equipment needed to respond to the consequences of the floods.

Through its student exchange programmes, the university has hosted students from Sapienza University of Rome, University of Plovdiv, University of Strasbourg, University of Graz, University of the District of Columbia, University of Pristina in North Mitrovica, and University of Freiburg.
